I believe the point was like: why does she have to have that moment of getting angry at her dress? :( Couldn’t she be more like “I’m sorry, dress. ;_; You’re not suited to this task. *rip*” instead of “Hate for this!! It is girly and girl-ness is holding me back all the time! *hulk-breakout*”

Yes, as an affirmedly super-not-feminine girl myself, I am still sick of the dichotomy that is set up where you are EITHER ~a girl who likes dresses~ OR ~a girl who likes to shoot a bow and arrow.~ In fact this is precisely why I like Bo from Lost Girl, who likes to dress like a pretty princess sometimes but also gets all practical-clothing’d up and goes out to kick some ass. There isn’t some stupid fucking “you’re girly OR badass” thing going on.

And the point isn’t that women do police each other sometimes in real life - the point is that I’m tired of seeing it come from the mom all the time while the dad is the super-understanding one in the media. I mean maybe this movie is just going to blow my mind with some kind of new, fun take on it, but it always comes out to me like “gee you should have listened to your sensible manly man dad - hysterical, pearl-clutching mom was just being hysterical again and in the end we sure proved her wrong!”

Arguably, this particular character is STUCK in her dress (frustrating!) rather than having chosen it for the occasion. But I see your points, and they’re quite valid and interesting. I do dig heavy on the kickass ladies who are also not afraid to be all feminine.

As for the portrayal of chill supportive dad and mom’s a nutter, fer sure. I imagine it varies from family to family (and like I said, not paying attention to media lately for this). I apologize for my original wording though, as it looks a little harsher than I meant it in retrospect. :)

Sure, it’s frustrating not to have a choice. But every time you talk about a character’s reaction to something, you have to remember who ACTUALLY put them in that position: it wasn’t their fellow fictional characters or circumstances of the fictional world, it was the real world creators/writers/designers behind the story.

They COULD be showing a girl who was able to choose her own clothes, but instead they’re showing one that is trapped into something against her will.  Why do they CHOOSE something symbolic of femininity to trap the character in? (Even if “dress = girly” could be broken down as a problem in its own right.)

I have no problem with what things you’ve been saying XD; Like, it’s better for girls to see examples of independent characters who aren’t socially maladjusted (Ariel goes against her parents’ wishes to find her own happiness the same as this girl, apparently.. but she does it by becoming creepily obsessed with a guy and making ill-advised decisions and such) .. But, similar to Dani, I am disappointed in this trailer because I was hoping for something fresher. (I still look forward to watching the movie.)

CG animated movies have been consistent let-downs for me though, so I am not surprised. [Speaking of which: imagine this movie compared to How To Train Your Dragon. Boy characters tend to start out as “losers” who have a lot to learn in various areas (even if they are good at some things that people just don’t respect them for), whereas the girl characters tend to start out like this girl, already super-skill-powered & perfect yet STILL not respected by those around them because they are too boyish. What is up with that?? And, to the heart of my point: How is it fair to expect girls to role-model after such “perfect” characters when boys are allowed to just live up to “socially awkward guy who does 1 noteworthy, heroic thing”?

just reblogged this for raikari’s commentary/response :D because it is p. much what I was trying to say but it’s a weekendzzzzzngfh <3
